Two itinerant Berlin-based artists working at the borders of visual art and music come to Certain Sundays. Tisha Mukarji, in a rare local appearance, will take us on a virtual journey through her diverse oeuvre including inside piano playing, writing, and drawing. Phonographer and improviser Peter Cusack will share new recordings and stories from his recent trip to Kazakhstan, and discuss their relation to his ongoing project “Sounds from Dangerous Places.”
Tisha Mukarji is a pianist, composer, and artist. She holds an M.F.A from the Malmö Art Academy in Fine Arts and has performed and recorded her work extensively in Europe. She is the author of Auscultation (Berlin:Argobooks, 2010), and has CD releases on Creative Sourves Records (D is for Din, 2006) and Another Timbre (Endspace, 2008).
Peter Cusack is a field recordist and sound artist with a special interest in acoustic ecology. He initiated the “Favourite Sounds Project” that explores what people find positive about their everyday sound environment. The project has been carried out in London, Beijing, Chicago, Prague, Birmingham, Southend on Sea and Berlin. His project Sounds From Dangerous Places explores soundscapes at sites of major environmental damage – Chernobyl; Caspian oil fields; UK nuclear sites. He now describes the use of sound to investigate documentary issues as sonic journalism.
He lectures on ‘Sound Arts & Design’ at the University of the Arts, London and was DAAD artist-in-residence in Berlin during 2011/12 working on the project Berlin Sonic Places that considers the relationship between soundscape and urban development.
